Vastu Shastra Basics: 8-Direction Vedic Architecture for Home and Office

Vastu Shastra (Sanskrit: vastu = dwelling site; shastra = science) is the Vedic architectural system that arranges built space in alignment with cosmic forces. It is older than Feng Shui (the Chinese sister system) and shares broad principles while differing in directional specifics.

Vastu's foundation:

• **8 cardinal and inter-cardinal directions** — N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
• **5 great elements (pancha mahabhutas)** — earth, water, fire, air, space
• **9 planets ruling specific directions and zones**
• **The Vastu Purusha mandala** — a deity-grid mapped to a 9×9 (or sometimes 8×8) site division

Each direction is governed by a specific planet/deity. Arranging functions of the home (cooking, sleeping, washing, studying) according to these rulers aligns the daily routine with cosmic flow — that is Vastu's claim, and the basis of millennia of Indian architectural practice.

**North (Uttara) — Mercury / Kubera (god of wealth)** Best for: Cash safe, business office, finance work Avoid: Heavy storage that blocks the direction

**Northeast (Ishan) — Jupiter / Lord Brahma** Most sacred direction. Best for: Puja room, study, meditation Avoid: Toilets, kitchen, storage. The northeast must be light, open, and clean.

**East (Purva) — Sun / Indra** Best for: Main entrance, living room, prayer space Avoid: Tall walls or trees blocking morning sunlight

**Southeast (Agneya) — Venus / Agni (fire god)** Best for: Kitchen, fireplace, generators, electrical equipment Avoid: Sleeping (fire energy disturbs rest)

**South (Dakshina) — Mars / Yama** Best for: Heavy storage, tall furniture, support walls Avoid: Main entrance facing south (modern Vastu still debates this; traditional says no)

**Southwest (Nairutya) — Rahu / Niruti** Best for: Master bedroom, heavy furniture, locker placement Avoid: Cuts or extensions; the SW must be solid and weighty

**West (Paschim) — Saturn / Varuna** Best for: Children's bedroom, dining, bathroom Avoid: Main entrance for some chart configurations

**Northwest (Vayavya) — Moon / Vayu** Best for: Guest room, washing area, ventilation, garage Avoid: Master bedroom (the air-element disturbs deep settling)

**Kitchen** — southeast (Agni's direction). Cook facing east. Sink and stove never adjacent (water-fire conflict). Refrigerator in southwest is acceptable.

**Master bedroom** — southwest. Bed positioned so head points south or east when sleeping (north is classically avoided). Mirrors not facing the bed.

**Children's bedroom** — west or northwest.

**Pooja (prayer) room** — northeast. Idols facing west (so the worshipper faces east). Lamp in southeast corner of the room.

**Living room** — east, north, or northeast. Heavy furniture in south/southwest, light furniture in east/north.

**Toilets** — northwest, west, or south are acceptable. NEVER northeast (most-cited Vastu mistake). Septic tank in northwest.

**Cash safe / locker** — door opens north. Placed in southwest or west of master bedroom.

**Main entrance** — east, north, or northeast preferred. South-facing entrance is workable but requires Vastu correction. West-facing depends on individual chart.

**Study room** — east, northeast, or north. Desk faces east or north. Bookshelf in north or west wall.

**Plot orientation** — square or rectangular preferred (golden ratio acceptable). T-shape, L-shape need correction. Plot extension in north, east, or northeast is auspicious; extension in south or southwest is not.

Real Vedic homes rarely have perfect Vastu — most have some defects. The corrections range from simple to architectural:

• **Northeast toilet** (most common defect): place a copper bowl with water and copper coins; seal cracks; use frequent salt cleansing
• **Kitchen in northeast**: paint kitchen walls red or copper; add fire-element decor; avoid using if possible
• **Bedroom in northeast**: minimise sleep there; if unavoidable, sleep with head south
• **Cuts in southwest**: fill with heavy furniture or storage; never leave hollow
• **Open well/water in south**: cover or relocate
• **Main door facing south without correction**: install Vastu yantra above the door; chant Hanuman Chalisa weekly facing south
• **Mirror facing bed**: cover at night

Vastu yantras (Vastu Devata yantra, Mahalakshmi yantra) are classical correction tools. Purification through homa (fire ceremony) is recommended for newly purchased properties with multiple defects.
